Helping a Veteran fight post traumatic stress disorder
Description
An estimated one in five veterans deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan since 2001 has or will develop post-traumatic stress disorder or major depression. Most of theose veterans will not seek treatment due to the stigma associated with the disorder.Clinical studies show that a service and companion dog can have a significant positive impact on those disorders. For veteran with PTSD, like myself, a service dog can help gauge the safety of my surroundings, allowing me to venture into public places without constantly scanning for snipers and hidden bombs that are lurking in the minds of those of us with this disorder. It helps us to learn to trust and care again. Service dogs are trained to perform tasks for a specific veteran. They will survey dark rooms, turn on lights, wake us up from night terrors and detecting
detect anxiety. Training and matching PTSD dogs can take years and can cost more than $25,000 and the organization that do train the dogs are overwhelmed with applications. With your help, I will be able to see the benefits of having a PTSD dog and grow to live a more normal life. Our goal is to raise enough money to help other veterans in need.
